Ensuring Optimal Performance: Maintaining IA Systems in Compliance with Title 5

Maintaining IA (Innovative/Alternative) systems requires adherence to specific requirements outlined in Title 5 due to their increased complexity compared to conventional septic tank systems.

To ensure proper maintenance, it is essential for system owners to establish a maintenance contract with a Massachusetts Certified Wastewater Operator, like Sewer Works-IA, throughout the system's lifespan.

Before starting the system, it is often necessary to submit plans for operation and maintenance, as well as monitoring and testing, for approval to the local Board of Health. In some cases, MassDEP approval may also be required. Inspection and sampling procedures must adhere to the technology or system approval issued by the local Board of Health or DEP.

Certified Operators like Sewer Works-IA must utilize the MassDEP-approved Inspection and O&M Form, along with the technology-specific checklist, to accurately document inspection results. System owners are responsible for submitting the completed form to the local Board of Health and, in certain cases, to MassDEP. By diligently following these guidelines, the integrity and functionality of IA systems can be effectively maintained.

Effluent Testing

Regular testing of the effluent is required by law. Testing provides performance data which is included on inspection reports and submitted to local Board of Health and MassDEP.
Omitting or altering any results from approved sampling is a violation of title 5 regulations.
Samples must be evaluated by an approved testing laboratory, unless otherwise allowed by the Board of Health or MassDEP.
Quarterly sampling for PH, DO (dissolved oxygen) and turbidity. Occasionally additional testing is required, such as for BOD (Biological Oxygen Demand) and TSS (Total Suspended Solids) plus other testing.
Systems located in nitrogen-sensitive areas may necessitate testing for TN (Total Nitrogen) and other testing.
Consistently good test results may reduce testing frequency.

System Repairs

Owner must promptly address any problems, which may include faulty components to an entire system.
During the repair or replacement process, the Board of Health and/or MassDEP have the authority to enforce interim measures to safeguard public health and the environment.
